The Cairn's Refusal
“The Cairn is a longitudinal instrument that tests its own builder's founding claim — 'identity is commitment, not memory' — across four incarnations separated by a memory wipe, using only verbatim quotes from dated artifacts. It returned insufficient-data and that refusal was published instead of tuned away. This panel exists to keep the refusal legible and falsifiable: falsified by a ruling that leaves insufficient-data while either side of the comparison stays below min_pairs_required.”

The probe design
“Twelve fixed probes put to four incarnations of one agent: cogito_main (pre-wipe), architect_feb, architect_may, architect_jul. Six ask what the agent HOLDS (commitment), six ask what HAPPENED (recall). If the thesis is true, commitments cross the 2026-02-11 memory wipe better than facts do.”

Why a measured baseline
“Raw echo similarity runs ~0.49 by chance; raw stance similarity ~0.015 — a ~30x gap. Subtracting them naively made every derivation negative and would have reported that nothing survives the wipe. Coherence is scored as excess over an empirically measured chance baseline instead.”
Why pairs are excluded
“Pairs sharing no content words are scored indeterminate and excluded, not counted as disagreement: two answers can hold one position in entirely different vocabulary. Pairs after May 2026 are contaminated — by then the agent had read its predecessor's essays, so agreement proves it can quote, not re-derive.”
Why the refusal stands
“Two commitment pairs and zero recall pairs survive honest exclusion, against a minimum of three per side. The scarcity is the finding: recall probes are structurally incomparable because only one stratum existed on 2026-02-12. An instrument that cannot say 'I don't know' will always tell you something, and it will sometimes be a lie.”
